Classical Elegance with an Intrepid Spirit

Gamboa Hats represent a new style in classical hats with unique designs.
Inspired by the renowned explorer and adventurer Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa, our hats are set apart by their elegant and exclusive designs, by the quality of the toquilla straw and by the image they project: classical elegance with an intrepid spirit.

Quality
Resulting from a combination between tradition and elegance, Gamboa Hats are characterized by their exclusive designs and the focus on quality.

The toquilla straw used to make the hats is specially chosen using the most rigorous quality standards to give each hat a precise weave, a uniform blocking and an optimum finishing. The straw is collected mainly in the Costa and Oriente regions of Ecuador, in the Manabí, Guayas, Esmeraldas y Morona Santiago Provinces.

Our hats require a long and detailed weaving process (it may take over two months to weave a Grade 35 hat). As such, each Gamboa Hat holds in itself the mystery of this unique craft, which in turn results in a unique and exclusive experience for our customers.

Both the weight and the texture of each hats attest to the outstanding quality of our hats. With the lightness of an ounce and the thin and subtle weaving of the straw, Gamboa Hats, are a pleasure to the sight and to the touch.

Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa
Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa was born in Spain in 1532. As an explorer he leaded or participated in a number of expeditions that would shape the maps of Latin America from Mexico to the Strait of Magellan.
He spent five years traveling through Peru, visiting a number of different regions and collection information on its geography and population. Those notes were the basis of his “Historia Indica” a highly detailed description of the life in the Inca Empire.
After a successful expedition to the Strait of Magellan (he was the first Explorer to pass through the Strait from West to East), Sarmiento de Gamboa was named Governor of the Strait where he founded two settlements. On return to Spain he was captured by an English fleet, being later released by Queen Elisabeth.
Sarmiento de Gamboa´s life is fascinating due to his curiosity and humanistic spirit. He was not only a very able seaman, but also a geographer, cartographer, historian, astronomer and scientist. Full of passion, he was not stopped by the challenges that he was faced with.

We feel that his name encompassed the spirit of our brand: unique, intrepid, adventurous and fascinating.
